#Bodylove – A project comes to Bremen

Wednesday noon, brilliant sunshine. Photographer Silvana Denker takes  her project #BodyLove  to Bremen. 8 women in black underwear will be photographed by her in the middle of the pedestrian zone. Each of them with a large black letter on her bare belly – B-O-D-Y-L-O-V-E   marching arm in arm in front of Silvana’s camera.
I must admit, I had concerns. The idea of women getting undressed and  showing off just in bra and panties  publicly, discomfited me. I wondered whether our desire for tolerance and acceptance could be detrimental and saw my feminist convictions undermined. Therefore, it is  so important for me to be there when this campaign is going to take place.

They prove me wrong quickly. The moment  I meet Silvana and her girls everything feels just right. This has nothing to do with the pervasive sexualization in advertising. Here are 8 women who  show off to the world with confidence and say: We are as we are and we feel as one  with ourselves.

It’s about tolerance, acceptance and diversity for Silvana Denker. Starting as a small campaign in her hometown, this project  has developed into something remarkable. Women from all over Germany are asking for it to take place in their city, apply for participation and share the #Bodylove photo series on the social networks. There is also great interest shown  from the USA, UK, France and South America.

The very moment  the girls gather in a row creates an incredible vibe, an atmosphere of tension, joy, excitement, fun and pride. That rubs off on the audience. I watch the spectators and explore  the approval and sympathy in their faces. It is photographed from all sides like crazy and at the end  there is a round of applause for the girls .

It certainly takes courage to publicly strip to bra and panties, to show oneself and get photos taken of publicly. In the age of social networks  pictures spread rapidly and are there to stay for all times …. death bed repentance excluded. I admire these young women and even though  I would never participate in a campaign like this, they still have my full support.
